Bay Area Rescue Mission "At the Bay Area Rescue Mission, we offer help for the “whole person”:
- Food, shelter, warm showers and fresh clean clothes for the body
- A gospel message of eternal hope for the soul
- Biblical studies, computer-aided learning, and GED preparation for the mind
- Job skills training in culinary arts, warehousing, heavy equipment operation, office work, construction, security, janitorial service, and automotive sales and service for the hands
- Parenting classes, job preparedness, anger management, counseling, and personal financial management classes for the character
- Compassion, friendship, fellowship, retreats, outings, and prayer meetings for the heart"
Berkeley Food and Housing Project, Men's Housing Program "BFHP assists low-income and homeless individuals with needs and disabilities that are not effectively met by mainstream social services. The agency hallmark is to provide services with compassion to foster a nurturing, healing environment that can effectively end an individual’s cycle of homelessness."
Services Provided
"The MHP is located in the Veteran’s Memorial Building in Downtown Berkeley and provides 48 single men’s beds and 5 emergency cots/beds on a nightly basis. Of the MHP’s 48 beds: 1) twelve (12) are reserved for men who are homeless Veterans and who may remain in the program for a period of up to 24 months; 2) ten (10) are designated for Community Housing and Shelter Services (CHASS) clients who are referred by Alameda County Social Services and receive General Assistance (if not filled daily, these beds are open to anyone referred through the City’s Centralized Shelter Reservation System operated by BFHP); 3) Twenty-six (26) are available to be placed through community referrals and direct calls to the MHP during weekdays, and evening and weekend placement through the Centralized Shelter Reservation Program. The MHP provided 12 additional beds during the 2013-14 Winter Season due to the closure of the Winter Shelter Program at the Oakland Army Base."
Target Population and Number of Persons Served
"Homeless males who are residing in Berkeley at the time of their homelessness. Per HMIS, 430 unduplicated individuals were served in calendar year 2013. Thirty-five percent (35%) were chronically homeless. Sixty percent (60%) presented with a long-term disability. With respect to AMI, 97% were extremely low-income; 2% very low-income; and 1% low-income. With respect to positive housing placements, 99 individuals were transitioned to permanent housing."

Per HMIS, 416 unduplicated individuals were served in calendar year 2013, of which 346 were adults and 70 children. Thirty-five percent (35%) were chronically homeless. Seventy-six percent (76%) presented with a long-term disability. Fifty-one percent (51%) of adults and 37% of children reported as being survivors of domestic violence. With respect to AMI, 96% were extremely low-income; and 3.6% very low-income; and 0.4% low-income. With respect to positive housing placements, 124 individuals were transitioned to permanent housing."
